'An average day in Tuskar Trials'
An average day at TUSKER TRAILS would start with morning wake-up call along with tea/coffee and biscuits at 5:45 a.m. At 6:30 we would leave for the Bandipur campus to pick up our guide. Our vehicles, designed with serious photographers in mind, ensure comfortable seating with good elbow room and wide angle of view. Our drivers are experienced jungle drivers who know not only their animals but also their passengers! The forest itself offers some of the best 'lighting' among the southern Indian jungles. The complexity and diversity of more than 50 species of trees, bamboos, palms, shrubs and herbs will bewilder us. Teak, Rosewood, Sandal, the Banyan are some of the famous species in this forest as also 'Strychnos nux-vomica' from the seeds of which strychnine is derived. Among the 20 odd mammals, elephants, emphatically, take pride of place by their sheer bulk, intelligence and mischievousness. We would also have a fair chance of spotting some of the unique ones such as barking deer, four- horned antelope, the Malabar and Flying Squirrels, etc., Peacock, Jungle Fowl, Parakeets, the Bulbuls, the handsome Crested Hawk and Crested Serpant Eagles are common here from among 180 plus species of birds whose presence and populations fluctuate along with the seasons. May be a cobra gliding across the forest floor with its hood extended will mesmerise us. And, wouldn't spotting one of the 'Cats' top the trip?
Two to two & half hours of good viewing and we'll be back at TUSKER TRAILS for a hearty breakfast. "Next, the pool. What better place to unwind after the rigours of the morning"? (Unless, of course, we're booked to go on a trek or for some other activity), Lunch, good Western & Indian cuisine and then perhaps a siesta before tea at 3:30 p.m. and the evening trip into the forest ?
Back after the trip, "wasn't the gaur magnificent? After all it's the largest bovine on earth", or "the evening light truly brought out the beauty of the forest......." Time enough to freshen up before the wildlife/nature video movie. Shall we watch 'Echo' or the ones on Indian Wildlife? 'The Lord of the Jungle'? 'The Land of the Tiger'? Or, perhaps the 'Whistling Hunters'? All this with a relaxing drink in our hands. Dinner time soup, a baked dish, vegetables, tandoori chicken tonight! Round it off with pudding.
