The Rockfort Temple is Trichy's most famous landmark.This magnificient temple is dedicated to Lord Siva,his consort Parvathi and Lord Ganesha. Built on an 83m high rock that dates back to 3800 million years ,it offers a spectacular view of the city .Built by the Pallavas, this was later fortified by the Nayaks. Climbing up the 437 steps cut into the rock face is a picturesque and spiritual experience as several small shrines dot the way.

The famous Srirangam Temple is a marvel of South Indian architecture and spread over an astounding 2.5 sq.kms with 21 huge gopurams. The temple was built between the 14th and 17th centuries on an island in the Cauvery. It boasts of the world's largest temple tower,a mammoth 13-tiered, 72 mt marvel! It is known as the Raja Gopuram and has a gleaming golden dome which is plated with pure gold leaves!

This ancient Tiruvanaikkaval or Jambukeswarar temple was built in the 1st Century B.C. under a jambu tree and is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati. Its rare architectural style features a twin layer of pillars in the temple tank.The lingam here is partially submerged by water representing God-incarnate. An elephant was believed to be the first to have worshipped Lord Siva here.Later it was patronized by the Chola,Pandya, Hoysala and Madurai Nayak Kings.

In mid-December, the Vaikunda Ekadasi, or Paradise Festival is celebrated in the Vishnu Temple. Thousands of people throng the temple to participate in this rare event - a glimpse of the 'Sorga Vasal' or 'Door to Heaven', which is a huge door, opened only once a year.
